Music Tip Mondays: Reading Music Part 4

Back again for another Music Tip Mondays! I’m learning a lot doing these screencasts, as I’m a student myself and I hope the tips I share are useful. If I’m ever off and share incorrect information though, I fully expect you to correct me! 🙂

Hey, what happened to quarter rests? One of my students (a 5 year old) calls rests “silent notes.”

Are you going to demonstrate how to count rhythms with different duration (or lengths) of notes? Here is a fun way to understand how to count note duration on the beat using fruit. For each measure: for 4 quarter notes you say “watermellon”. for half notes you say “cherry.” for triplets (the beat divided by three) you say “canteloup”. and for a hole note you say “Plum”.

Just a fun way to help understand counting beats.

Your tips rock though, thanks! I briefly talked about rhythm in the first screencast but will do a dedicated session to it and will use your fun method to demonstrate. Thanks
